POST ESWL/STENT PLACEMENT SURGERY INSTRUCTION SHEET

What You Can Expect:

Day of the procedure. The frequency/urgency to urinate, bloody urine, burning upon urination, apply ice to treatment area = 15 minutes on an 45 minutes off. Do not apply heat for 24 hours. If you have a stent, you’ll have a cramping feeling when you start or stop urinating or pain on your side.

1 Day After: Frequency/urgency may or may not decrease, blood in urine may increase with activity, burning on urination. If you have a stent, cramping feeling at start or stop of urination, moderate pain on your side.

2 Days After: Frequency/urgency may or may not decrease, blood in urine which may increase with activity, mild burning upon urination. If you have a stent: cramping feeling at start or stop of urination, moderate pain on your side.

3 Days After: Frequency/urgency to urinate, blood in urine which may increase with activity, mild burning upon urination. If you have a stent: cramping feeling at start or stop of urination, moderate pain on your side.

Note: It is not unusual to have all of these symptoms for some time after your procedure. If you have no relief from pain medication, call your Urologist at 941-309-7000.

 

What To Do Now: 

Day of Procedure: Strain urine and save particles to take to your Urologist on the next visit.

  • Do not drive or operate heavy machinery, do not be alone without an adult for 24 hours. Rest and relax the rest of the day and avoid lifting more than 5 pounds.
  • drink 6 8oz glasses of water no alcohol and resume your prescription medications and take pain medication as directed.

Call your physician at 941-309-7000 if you have uncontrolled pain, flu-like symptoms, cannot urinate for 8 or more hours, uncontrollable nausea/vomiting. Dial 911 if you have any chest pain, pain down your left arm or shortness of breath. 

Day After: Continue to strain urine and save particles.

  • Do not operate heavy machinery if you take pain medication, rest and do not life anything over 5 pounds.
  • Eat your regular diet. If you have no nausea, drink 6 8oz glasses of water, avoid alcohol.
  • Take prescribed medication, take pain medication as directed and take antibiotics if prescribed for you.

Call your physician at 941-309-7000 if you have uncontrolled pain, flu-like symptoms, cannot urinate for 8 or more hours, uncontrollable nausea/vomiting. Dial 911 if you have any chest pain, pain down your left arm or shortness of breath. 

2 Days After: Continue to strain urine and save particles and walk as tolerated.

  • Eat your regular diet and drink 6 8oz glasses of water.
  •  Take prescribed medication, take pain medication as directed and take antibiotics if prescribed for you.

Call your physician at 941-309-7000 if you have uncontrolled pain, flu-like symptoms, cannot urinate for 8 or more hours, uncontrollable nausea/vomiting. Dial 911 if you have any chest pain, pain down your left arm or shortness of breath. 

3 Days After: Continue to strain urine and save particles and walk as tolerated.

  • Eat your regular diet and drink 3 to 5 quarts of liquids per day. At least half of this total should be water and exclude coffee, teas, soda and alcohol.
  •  Take prescribed medication, take pain medication as directed and take antibiotics if prescribed for you.

Call your physician at 941-309-7000 if you have uncontrolled pain, flu-like symptoms, cannot urinate for 8 or more hours, uncontrollable nausea/vomiting. Dial 911 if you have any chest pain, pain down your left arm or shortness of breath. 

PROBLEMS YOU SHOULD REPORT TO US:
  • Fevers over 101 Fahrenheit.
  • Heavy bleeding, or clots (See notes above about blood in urine).
  • Inability to urinate.
  • Drug reactions (Hives, rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). e. Severe burning or pain with urination that is not improving.
FOLLOW-UP:

You will need a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress and to remove the stent.
